The Walkaway Number · Chapter 7 · Mark the calendar to market

The Time Audit

Record two actual weeks, classify what the hours produced, and test one responsible recovery change.

Output: A two-week evidence log, category and value totals, one reversible recovery experiment, and one permitted protected block.

Time: Two weeks of measurement, then about 30 minutes to review

Complete the two-week evidence window.

1. Lock the measurement period

Don't change behavior during the first measurement period. Include preparation, follow-up, transition time, and the evening check that migrated off the calendar.

2. Record activity blocks

High means an outcome. Medium means a real expectation that may be compressible. Low means habit, duplication, ceremony, or unclear ownership.

Compliance, documentation, coaching, and care work aren't low value merely because they're slow. Consequence is the test, not enjoyment.

4. Run one reversible recovery experiment

5. Protect one permitted block

Don't use paid time, confidential information, employer systems, or company relationships for an undisclosed outside business.

Health boundary

The log doesn't diagnose burnout. Repeated fifty-five-hour weeks deserve workload and health attention. The log doesn't diagnose burnout.

Completion test

Measure fourteen consecutive days without optimizing, explain the value of every block, identify realistic recovery, run one owner-approved experiment, and protect one permitted block with a defined output.

Monday Move

Log the last five workdays, including the transition and the little evening check that allegedly took two minutes. Calendars are excellent witnesses once cross-examined.
