Hard to Fire
Soft Landing · Chapter 5 · Optional household tool

The Partner Conversation Framework

This is a money meeting, not a referendum on who caused the fire. Put the three numbers on the table and leave with a plan instead of a fight.

Output: One scheduled 30-minute household money conversation with a prepared opening, three current numbers, a specific ask, an agreed or unresolved plan, and a dated follow-up.

Opening

I've done the math on where we stand financially. We have [X months] of runway before we'd need to make bigger changes. I want to walk you through the numbers and figure out together where we can extend that.

Three numbers

Monthly burn: [monthly burn]. Monthly incoming cash flow: [monthly income]. Current runway: [months].

The ask

I think we should target a monthly burn rate of [target burn], which extends our runway to [target runway] months. Here's what I'd cut to get there. What am I missing?

Next: confirm the Runway Calculator is complete.

1. Before the conversation

Complete the Runway Calculator first. Schedule this like a meeting. Total time: 30 minutes. Not more.

Pick a time when both people are rested and the kids are not present.

2. Keep the 30-minute agenda

Opening2 minutes

Lead with the answer, not the problem.

Numbers10 minutes

Share three current numbers only.

Ask10 minutes

Name a target, proposed cuts, and invite correction.

Close3 minutes

Set the two-week check-in.

Buffer5 minutes

Use the remaining time for clarification, not a second meeting.

3. Prepare the three numbers

Share three numbers only: monthly burn rate, monthly incoming cash flow, and total runway.

4. Prepare the ask

5. Close with a plan

“Let's check in on this every two weeks. Fifteen minutes. Same format: how we're tracking, what's changed, any decisions we need to make together.”

No meeting outcome recorded.

Conversation record still has an unresolved preparation, outcome, plan, or follow-up field.

Completion test: The Runway Calculator is complete, the 30-minute conversation is scheduled, all three current numbers and both target numbers are entered, the proposed cuts and partner response are recorded, the outcome is documented, and a two-week check-in or required retry is dated.

If it goes sideways

If the conversation starts producing heat instead of light, name it and table it. If it keeps escalating, close the meeting early and try again in 48 hours. A short, incomplete conversation that stays civil is better than a long one that produces three weeks of silence.

“That's a real conversation, but it's not this conversation. This one is just the numbers. Can we come back to that separately?”

Boundary

This framework organizes one household conversation. It is not financial or relationship advice, and it does not decide what either partner must accept.

Monday Move

Complete the Runway Calculator first. Then schedule one 30-minute conversation at least 24 hours after the initial news and enter the three current numbers.
